Country Kitchen in the Flower Market: Poppy + Rose

Before the towers and the galleries claimed their pieces of downtown, the Los Angeles Flower District was already a working neighborhood, awake before dawn, scented with stock and rose and the wet cardboard of wholesale stems. Poppy + Rose opened in 2014 inside that market world at 765 Wall Street, and it has remained a morning house while the blocks around it changed. Founders Chef Michael Reed and Kwini Reed built the restaurant as a California reading of the country kitchen: recipes written from scratch, Southern memory, farmers-market produce, and a floral interior that is not a theme so much as a neighborly fact. Michael Reed’s cooking has since drawn James Beard attention. Kwini Reed’s presence in the front of house is the reason so many guests speak of being looked after rather than processed. The people at the tables are downtown workers on a weekday, couples on a Saturday, and visitors who have learned that the Flower District is one of the last parts of central Los Angeles that still feels like a trade.

The room is bright and planted, with an easy indoor-outdoor relationship to the patio entered from Maple Street. It is kept. It is not a hotel salon, and it does not pretend to be. White plates, flowers on the table, and a dining room that understands brunch as a full service—not a cafeteria line—give the meal its polish. Hours run daily from morning until mid-afternoon, which is a rare gift among destination breakfasts. You may come on a Wednesday. That daily discipline is part of why the kitchen’s comfort food still tastes considered rather than tired.

The signatures are earned. Buttermilk chicken and waffles is the plate most often named, and it deserves the reputation when the crust is shatter-crisp and the waffle is able to carry butter and heat. The fried chicken sandwich has its own following and is the right order if you are eating closer to lunch. Cubed hash browns, crisp outside and soft within, are the side that converts skeptics. Seasonal egg plates and biscuits keep the country-kitchen promise without sliding into heaviness. The bar’s brunch cocktails are built with the same from-scratch habit as the food; one is enough. If you are two people sharing, take the chicken and waffles and one brighter plate so the table has contrast. Validated parking at Eighth and Maple removes the worst of the district’s garage confusion if you follow the house instructions.

The benefit of Poppy + Rose over a hotel breakfast is human scale and authorship. You are in a restaurant owned by a married couple who still stand inside the work. You are eating cooking that comes from family memory and California markets, in a neighborhood that has sold flowers to this city for generations. Comfort here is the comfort of a kept table, a warm plate, and hospitality that believes breakfast should leave people restored for the rest of the day. For professionals who work downtown, it is the rare morning destination that does not require a drive to the Westside. For couples, it is festive without being loud in the wrong way.

The limitations should be said kindly. The Flower District is a working wholesale landscape; the walk from the car is not a garden path. Weekend waits happen because the house is loved. The luxury is in the cooking and the care, not in marble and a pianist. Guests hunting hush and heavy silver will be happier at the Polo Lounge; guests hunting a heartfelt plate in a room that still belongs to its owners will be happier here.

Poppy + Rose is a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination because it is independently held, unique to Los Angeles, open when people actually need breakfast, and proven at the level of chicken, waffle, pastry, and welcome. It is the downtown morning table that treats traditional comfort as a craft. In a city that often forgets the value of a well-run family house, this one remembers.
