Café Eclectic

The Cup She Crossed an Ocean to Find

North McLean Boulevard, at the settled edge of Midtown where Vollintine-Evergreen still behaves like a neighborhood, is a street of sidewalks and returning. People walk here. They know the faces in the windows. They wanted, for years, a corner that belonged to coffee in the European sense and to breakfast in the homemade sense, and they did not have it until Catherine Boulden decided that missing a thing was no reason to keep missing it. She had been a nurse. She had been a mother who took her children to Overton Park and the zoo and came home wishing for a room where an adult could sit with a proper cup while the day assembled itself. In Paris she had fallen in love with espresso served as if it mattered—thick porcelain, a small measure, no hurry. Memphis could not give her that cup. So in 2008 she built the room that would.

The love story is practical, which is how the best ones often are. Boulden was not born to restaurants. She scouted film locations. She raised a family. She and chef Mary O’Brien opened Café Eclectic with furniture found in classifieds and a stubborn belief that a neighborhood deserves bread baked that morning and coffee treated as a craft. The family still holds the keys. Pastries leave the oven daily. Marmilu Farms, Delta Grind, Lucy J’s challah, and the other local names on the ticket are not decorations. They are the shopping list of a house that decided, from the first week, to buy close to home.

Inside, Midtown finds the morning it wanted. The Illy bar—still uncommon in this city—sends up cappuccinos with a tight foam and the quiet authority of a cup that has been practiced. An old soda fountain stands not as nostalgia for sale but as a promise that sweetness can be made to order, the way it was when a neighborhood still had such a counter. Cases hold house pastry, including gluten-free and vegan sweets so no one at a table is left outside the pleasure of dessert. Light lies easily on the tables. The room is kept with the cleanliness of people who live nearby and would be ashamed to let the place slacken. Professionals take the early seats and read the paper as if time had been returned to them. Couples take the window and let the first conversation of the day happen over something hot.

Order as if the kitchen had been waiting to know you. The Bird & Biscuit is Mid-South affection on an open-faced plate: fried chicken, a biscuit born in this house, white gravy enough to make the morning feel looked after. Challah French toast from Lucy J’s arrives griddled and snowed with sugar, local bread given the respect of heat. The Diablo omelet folds the house’s spicy chicken with caramelized onion, pico, spinach, and cheddar; tofu will stand in without making a speech of it. Stuffed French toast, biscuits and gravy, a Nutella strawberry waffold when the pastry case is in that mood, an Illy cappuccino set down as if it were the point of coming—these are the reasons the room has lasted since 2008. Breakfast holds all day, which is a mercy for anyone whose love of morning does not obey an alarm.

The virtue is craft kept in a neighbor’s key. The graceful limitation is scale and candor. This is a café, not a dining room of linens and hush, and there is a second Café Eclectic in Harbor Town. The McLean original is the Diamond address because it is the founding room, the one Boulden willed into a building she could barely afford, the one that still smells like a bakery at seven. Weekend seats fill. A reservation, made with a little notice, is the difference between ease and a wait.

Citywide Spotlight awards Café Eclectic because Midtown asked for a morning house that baked its own bread and treated coffee as a discipline, and a nurse who had tasted Paris gave the city that house. A national breakfast chain will remember your points. This room will remember how you take the cappuccino. That is the older loyalty, and it is why a guest returns until the street itself feels like home.
