La Petite Grocery

A Century Building on Magazine, and Justin Devillier’s Louisiana Table

Upper Magazine is a stretch of storefronts and residences where Uptown meets the habit of going out. La Petite Grocery occupies a century-old building at 4238 Magazine Street that was, in fact, a grocery. Justin Devillier arrived in New Orleans in 2003, cooked at Bacco, Stella, and Peristyle under Anne Kearney, and rose in this kitchen from the line to chef-partner. In 2016 he won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South. With his wife, Mia, he has kept the group inside the city: this dining room, Justine in the Quarter, and Daughter’s Neighborhood Italian planned for the old Upperline space. The Dinner Diamond is La Petite Grocery, where contemporary Louisiana cooking is plated for evening rather than for a brasserie crowd.

The restored interior is polished and warm: wood, a proper bar, and a dining room that reads as a destination without leaving the neighborhood. Professionals and couples fill it because the cooking is precise and the welcome is grown. Reservations are preferred. Comfort is traditional as craft and family partnership—a husband and wife running a house, a chef who hunts and fishes, a menu that names Louisiana ingredients without turning them into costume.

Blue crab beignets are the opening the city expects. Turtle Bolognese with a soft-boiled egg is the plate that explains Devillier’s argument: Creole product, European technique, no need for a tasting script. Panéed rabbit, Gulf fish, and seasonal vegetables keep the table moving with the market. Classic cocktails—an Old Fashioned done correctly—suit the room. Brunch exists; this award is dinner.

You choose La Petite Grocery over a hotel restaurant because the building has a New Orleans past and the kitchen has a chef who still lives in the work. The amenity is Magazine Street ease with fine-dining finish, plus a farm-and-Gulf sensibility that never requires a manifesto. Compared with a multi-city group, this remains a local house.

The graceful considerations: Magazine parking and waits at peak. The Devillier group is growing inside New Orleans; guests should come to this address for this cooking, not treat every doorway as the same meal. The room is popular, which is the tax on quality.

La Petite Grocery is a Dinner Diamond because modern Louisiana cooking needed a luxurious à la carte seat that is still independently rooted here. You come for the beignets, the Bolognese, and a Magazine evening that feels finished.
