Brigtsen’s

A Victorian Cottage on Dante Street, Where the Gulf Still Reaches the Table

The Riverbend, where the streetcar turns and the river is close, is one of Uptown’s gentlest corners: cottages, oaks, and neighbors who still call for a table. Brigtsen’s occupies a Victorian house at 723 Dante Street. Frank Brigtsen spent seven years as executive chef under Paul Prudhomme at K-Paul’s. Paul and K Prudhomme helped Frank and Marna Brigtsen open this restaurant in 1986. Forty years later the same couple still owns it. Frank fishes when he can. The menu is contemporary Louisiana cooking with a fisherman’s bias: seasonal seafood, a dark Cajun gumbo, and plates that change because the water and the market change.

The interior is a house, not a hall: lace, still-life paintings, small rooms, and the courtesy of owners who take reservations by telephone. Last seating is early by city standards. Tuesday through Saturday from five o’clock. Closed Sunday and Monday. Couples and careful diners find the cottage built for conversation. Comfort here is the oldest kind—someone cooking in a house, product from nearby, and a meal that ends before it becomes a performance.

Chicken and andouille gumbo with a dark roux and filé is the first sentence. New Orleans barbecue shrimp with calas, pan-fried local fish with roasted pecans and meunière, crab-crusted Gulf fish, and slow-roasted duck with cornbread dressing and honey-pecan gravy are the house at full voice. Soft-shell crab in season can be the dinner of the year. Pecan pie and house ice creams close the meal as they should. Call 504-861-7610 between ten in the morning and closing. That old-school reservation line is part of the amenity.

You choose Brigtsen’s over a warehouse dining room because the cooking is personal and the setting is a home. The benefit is farm-and-Gulf locality without a slogan, a chef who is present, and à la carte plates that taste like south Louisiana rather than like a brand. Compared with a tasting menu or a Bourbon Street institution, this is a cottage that never needed a second city.

The graceful limitations are the cottage’s. Rooms are small. The last reservation is early. You must telephone. It is dressy-casual rather than tuxedo. Those are not defects. They are how a husband and wife have kept a restaurant honest for four decades.

Brigtsen’s is a Citywide Spotlight Dinner Diamond because the category required a farm-to-table house that is also a luxury of place: a Victorian dining room, a Prudhomme lineage, and a kitchen that still follows the season. You come here to eat fish cooked by a man who catches it, in a house that has belonged to the same family since 1986.
