Marietta Proper was chosen as Atlanta’s Wine Bar Diamond Destination because it offers the next most complete evening of serious wine, finished interiors, and adult hospitality. The room sits on historic Marietta Square, a short drive from the city center and well within one hundred miles, and it exists only here. Chef and sommelier Jordan Traylor, chef William Adamec of Dogwood Catering, and Marietta couple Kacey and Hillery Cecil opened the doors in January 2024 in a former jewelry store. A James Beard Award semifinalist nod for Best New Bar followed, not as fashion but as confirmation that the glass, the plate, and the room had been thought through together.

The owners did not import a concept from another city. They built a house for wine and small plates in the town they already served through the Foxglove event space. By day the room can receive coffee and brunch; by evening it becomes what the Diamond requires: a wine-and-whiskey forward bar with roughly one hundred fifty bottles, a thoughtful whiskey list, sparkling wines given real attention, and globally inspired small plates meant to keep company with the pour rather than drown it. Service is personal. Owners are known to stop at tables. The comfort is of a traditional kind—good chairs, low light that still lets you see the wine, and conversation that does not have to compete with a crowd.

A glass of sparkling wine or a small-producer white is the proper beginning. Ask for guidance through the list; the house is built for discovery rather than for showing off. Short ribs, shrimp and crab ravioli, and other composed small plates give the evening a center. Wine dinners and tasting evenings repay a reservation. Choosing Marietta Proper over a chain tapas bar or a hotel lounge means choosing a single, privately held room whose owners still stand in it, whose list is curated rather than templated, and whose setting was designed to feel like an evening rather than a transaction.

Step through the white brick façade and the Square falls away. Emerald upholstery, gold metalwork, and peacock-inspired wallpaper recall the polish of the 1920s without turning the place into costume. The upstairs wine bar is the refined public room; downstairs, a Prohibition-themed speakeasy holds private tastings and quieter gatherings. Sound is kept in check. Light is warm. The effect is luxurious without being stiff—an interior meant for couples and professionals who want to sit, order well, and remain for a second glass. Peak hours book, and the Square’s street parking asks a little patience, yet those are the ordinary courtesies of a destination that protects the evening instead of stretching it thin.

The neighborhood is Marietta Square itself: brick storefronts, independent shops, galleries, and restaurants in one of metro Atlanta’s most walkable historic districts. Antiques, boutiques, and evening strolling lie immediately outside the door, so a glass of wine pairs naturally with an hour of looking before or after. What the Diamond recognizes is not novelty but composition—a locally owned wine bar that looks finished, pours with care, and treats an adult evening as something still worth dressing the room for. After the last glass, what remains is the sense of a house kept with pride of craft: gold against green, a list worth asking about, and a square that still rewards those who come to sit rather than to rush.
