State and Pearson, A List That Takes All Evening: Alpana

Gold Coast wine rooms used to mean a hotel lobby or a steakhouse cellar. Alpana Singh built her own on State Street instead. Alpana occupies 831 North State as a wine-first house with a long list, flights, and food conceived the way she tastes Burgundy: balance, acid, texture. She grew up in a Monterey grocery, entered the trade at nineteen, became sommelier at Everest, and at twenty-six became the youngest woman—and the first South Asian—to pass the Master Sommelier exam. Check, Please! taught her that hospitality is the other half of the glass. This room is her most personal concept, named after her. The Diamond guest is the couple or the professional who wants the pour to lead the evening and who does not need a children’s menu.

The interior is the visual argument. Botanical wallpaper, a pink feather chandelier, a gallery of iconic women, plants, a bar that is first-come and fully menu-capable. It photographs. It also works as a place to sit and work through a region. Service reviews stay high because the floor can talk through twenty-plus pages without turning the night into school. Dress is casual chic; celebration is welcome. Traditional comfort here is the older wine-bar idea: two people, a bottle or a flight, food that knows how to sit beside the glass, an evening that is allowed to be adult.

Order from the list first. Ask for a flight if you want her mind on a region. A glass of something she is proud of that week is the simpler courtesy. Burrata and pasta exist to keep the wine company; the steak is not the reason this Diamond exists. Weekend brunch is the daylight version. Reservations help the dining room; the bar takes walk-ins. Corkage exists if you brought something rare and accept the fee. Two people should take the bar, start with a pour, and let the list decide whether dinner follows.

The limitations are part of a wine house that also serves food. Some guests find the plates less exciting than the cellar. Outdoor tables can catch a city sidewalk at the wrong moment. The room is fashionable; guests who want a dark tavern should stay on Hubbard. Parking is a garage a half block north or the Red Line at Chicago. A hotel wine list will have a sommelier and a room key. Alpana has Singh’s name on the door and a list she built to live with.

State Street at Pearson is Gold Coast walking: Oak Street boutiques a few blocks east, Michigan Avenue’s larger houses a few blocks south, small jewelers and apparel along Rush. After a flight you can shop without leaving the neighborhood that still treats dressing well as ordinary manners.

Alpana is a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination for wine because a Master Sommelier put her own name on a Gold Coast room and made the glass the point. Choosing this bar over a hotel cellar is a choice for Singh’s list, for a chandelier and a flight that belong to Chicago, and for the older amenity of an evening that does not have to include children to be complete. The comfort is traditional—conversation, a bottle, a chair that was meant for staying—and the benefit is leaving State Street having been poured by the person the room is named for.
