Cocoa + Co.

Wells Street, A Cellar List in Chocolate: Cocoa + Co.

Old Town’s Wells Street still rewards a slow walk. Second City and the old pipe-organ houses sit to one side; apparel and small shops fill the rest. Cocoa + Co. occupies 1651 North Wells as a chocolate cafe that behaves like a tasting room: bars from dozens of artisans, drinking chocolate, pastry, and a counter that expects you to sit. Kim Hack spent years in wine before she decided chocolate deserved the same attention—origin, process, a story in the bite. The Diamond guest is the professional or the couple who wants an afternoon in a finished room, a cup that is almost a meal, and a box chosen with more care than a mall ribbon.

Hack’s idea is simple and old-fashioned. Chocolate can be pleasure first. Knowing where the bean grew and how it was made makes the second bite better. The shop stocks bars the way a cellar stocks bottles, from European houses to small American makers, and then pours drinking chocolate and coffee so the visit is not only a purchase. Traditional comfort here is the sweet shop as a civil pause: two people, a table, something warm in the cup, something wrapped to take home.

The interior is a cafe that knows it is also a shop. Cases and shelves of bars, a short pastry line, seats that face the work of tasting rather than a laptop farm. Light comes off Wells. Service is the person who can talk through a bar without turning the afternoon into class. You dress for Old Town. You stay long enough for the chocolate to cool on the tongue.

Order drinking chocolate if you came for the activity. A mocha or a straight cup is the morning version. The salted caramel brownie is the pastry people repeat. Then walk the shelves: one dark bar from a maker you have not heard of, one milk bar if that is the house taste, a small box if the visit is a gift. Two people should take two cups, split a pastry, and leave with bars chosen on purpose. Weekday mornings close earlier than weekends. This is a daylight Diamond.

The limitations are honest. It is not a workshop rolling truffles in the window. Hours are cafe hours, not late evening. A national chocolatier on Michigan Avenue will have more purple ribbon and more cities. Cocoa + Co. will have a list and a chair. Guests who want only a molded souvenir should walk south to older Wells counters. Guests who want a grocery truffle should not come here.

Wells between North and Division is Old Town shopping at walking pace: independent apparel, home goods, the Piper’s Alley stretch, and North Avenue’s larger storefronts a short block away. After chocolate you can carry a bag through the neighborhood without needing a mall.

Cocoa + Co. is a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination for chocolate because the cup and the shelf are treated as craft in a Chicago-only cafe. Choosing this room over a national chocolatier is a choice for Hack’s wine-trained list, for drinking chocolate that requires a chair, and for the older amenity of leaving Wells Street with bars you can name. The comfort is traditional—a table, a sweet, a gift for the house—and the benefit is an afternoon that tastes finished rather than packaged.
