La Baguette

Butter, Flour, and Fifty Years of Poplar

Poplar Avenue at Chickasaw Gardens is Memphis in its settled register: a corridor of errands, old trees, the knowledge that a good shop can last if it refuses to become a concept. Since 1976 La Baguette has occupied 3088 as a family French bakery and café—bread drawn from the oven, pastry in a case that still looks like a case, lunch when the day wants a sandwich on bread that was not born in a factory. Chocolate croissants leave first. Petit fours wait for the guest who came to give something away. Baguettes go home under an arm. The Diamond is not a hotel pastry cart. It is this shop, still privately held, still baking as if tomorrow morning depended on it.

The interior is café and bakery in the older European key: a counter, a case, tables for breakfast and for the lunch that runs until three. Light finds the pastry. The room smells as a bakery must smell. Service has the courtesy of people who have wrapped the same tarts for neighbors for years. You may sit. You may take the box and walk. Cakes are offered for preorder when the occasion is larger than a single afternoon. Family recipes, family-tested, remain the grammar. Nothing here is trying to become a scene. Everything here is trying to be French bread in Memphis, which is a more ambitious sentence than it sounds.

Order the chocolate croissant while it is still arguing with the heat. A tart if the case is in a generous mood. Chicken salad on the house bread if you made a lunch of it. A baguette for the evening table. Then use Poplar as it was meant to be used. Overton Park and the Brooks are a short drive west. Laurelwood’s shops sit east along the same avenue. Chickasaw Gardens holds its quiet streets. This is an errand that can become an afternoon without ever leaving the city’s most familiar commercial spine.

The grace is longevity married to craft. The graceful limitation is the clock and the corridor. Lunch ends at three. Poplar is a working road. The room will not photograph like a newly designed dessert lounge. Come at opening if you want the croissant at its peak. Come because you wanted pastry that has been practiced for half a century, not pastry that was invented last spring.

Citywide Spotlight awards La Baguette the Pastry Diamond because no other Memphis shop combines that date, that case, and that fidelity to butter and flour. A trend bakery will give you a prettier box. This house will give you the bread the city has trusted since 1976. That is the amenity of 3088 Poplar: you leave carrying something that was made this morning, in this city, by a family that stayed.
