Toups Meatery

Carrollton Avenue, a Cajun Family Table at Lunch

Mid-City’s North Carrollton Avenue runs toward City Park and the museum, a corridor of oaks, streetcar track, and neighborhood commerce. Toups Meatery sits at 845 North Carrollton, close enough to the park that a midday meal can precede a walk under the trees. The guests are locals who treat lunch as a reward, couples driving in from Lakeview or Esplanade, and professionals who would rather eat pork and dirty rice than a convention sandwich.

Isaac and Amanda Toups opened the Meatery in the spring of 2012. The Toups family has been in Louisiana for more than three centuries. Isaac’s cooking is Cajun in the family sense—whole-animal respect, spice with purpose, a plate that looks like someone meant you to be full. James Beard nominations followed. Other Toups rooms exist in the region; this Diamond is the Mid-City lunch, where the chef’s midday plate and the charcuterie board still define the house.

The interior is rustic in the kept way: wood, a bar that understands bourbon, a patio when weather allows, and a dining room that feels like a hunting lodge taught table manners. It is not white-tie. It is not a food court. Smart casual is enough. Comfort aligns with traditional values here as family cooking raised to restaurant discipline—hospitality that assumes appetite is honorable.

Lunch runs through the week. The correct order is the one that tastes like the house: house charcuterie and pickles first, then the lunch plate that has long bundled boudin, a burger, and a beer for people who came hungry. Confit chicken thigh, the double-cut pork chop with dirty rice, and a BLT built with thick bacon and house ricotta on sourdough are the language of noon. Specials run with the season—crawfish when the boil is honest, oysters when the names on the board are good. Happy hour follows lunch on weekdays if the afternoon is yours.

You choose Toups Meatery over a generic gastropub because the cooking has a parish behind it. The amenity is a reserved table in a neighborhood that still lives around the park, plus a kitchen that butchers with intention. Compared with a tasting menu or a tourist Cajun stage set, this is à la carte food from a family that never needed to invent a story.

The graceful limitations are honest. It is a meat-forward room; vegetarians will work from the edges. The name tells the truth, and the plates are generous. Weekend brunch exists, but this award is the weekday lunch. Other Toups projects should not be treated as copies of this one.

Toups Meatery is a Diamond because midday New Orleans still deserves a chef’s Cajun table that is neither a shrine nor a souvenir. You come for the chop, the boudin, and the feeling that lunch can still be an event without requiring a jacket.
