The Bend in the Valley: Unicoi Outfitters at Nacoochee Bend

An hour and a half to an hour and forty-five minutes north of downtown Atlanta—about eighty-five miles through Gainesville and Cleveland—the Sautee Nacoochee Valley opens under the Blue Ridge. Past Hardman Farm and the Nacoochee Mound, Highway 17 runs a quiet line through pasture and timber. Unicoi Outfitters keeps its main shop at 2454 GA-17, a short distance from the private Chattahoochee water that made the house famous: Nacoochee Bend. The valley does the decorating. The river does the rest.

David Dockery opened the shop in 1994 with a home-equity line and a fisheries degree. Jimmy Harris, who had coveted this stretch of river for decades, became owner and the public face of North Georgia fly fishing. They began in a small building on the Chattahoochee north of Helen, grew with the sport, and in 2026 moved the Helen shop five minutes down the road into the valley—wraparound porch, loft for waders and tying materials, a view across the Nacoochee fields instead of downtown tourist traffic. A second shop still stands on Washington Street in Clarkesville. Use the Sautee address now. The old South Main listing is history.

Nacoochee Bend is 1.5 miles of private trophy water managed for large rainbows, with the occasional brown or brook. It is the only Unicoi private beat that allows unguided fishing, which matters to the traveling angler who already knows how to cast. The river here is broader than the upper Soque, kinder to a developing loop, and still large enough to hold a fish that stops a conversation. Guides also run Rainbow Point and Soque Camp on the Soque, plus permitted public water in the national forests. Start at the Sautee shop, take the day’s fly and the river report, then fish the Bend guided or unguided. Add a Soque day if you want larger water and a guide’s eyes. Buy the leader and the flies here; the shop exists so you do not guess. The Gilligan Special—an hour of instruction and two hours on the Bend—is the right door for a first-timer.

The shop interior is a working outfitter: flies in rows, rods from the names that last, waders and boots upstairs, staff who will not sell you a third gadget you do not need. Hours run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days in Sautee. The Clarkesville store adds conventional bass tackle for the highland lakes.

Spring and fall are the prime trout months. Summer fishes at first light. Winter is a dry-fly and nymph game on mild, clear days.

Across the road sits the Old Sautee Store. Two miles west are Hardman Farm and the mound. Anna Ruby Falls and Unicoi State Park are a short climb toward Helen. The town of Helen itself is five minutes north if you want alpine storefronts; the valley is the quieter choice.

Big-box outdoor stores will sell you gear. State parks will sell you a parking pass. Unicoi sells knowledge, private water, and a thirty-year relationship with this valley. Nacoochee Bend is the reason the award is an outfitter and not a roadside put-in. Comfort here means a porch looking at pasture, a staff that has fished these miles for most of their lives, and a beat you do not have to share with a Saturday crowd.

The strengths are the oldest full-service fly house in North Georgia, private trophy water with unguided access, a new valley shop with a porch and a view, guides who teach as well as wade, and two shops covering trout and bass country. The limits are the last miles of Helen-area weekend traffic, private-water days that book ahead in peak months, and the simple fact that this is wading and weather, not climate-controlled sport.

Unicoi Outfitters was chosen as a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination because Nacoochee Bend and the valley shop together give Atlanta a true sporting house—private water, a counter that knows the river, and owners who have been on this ground since 1994. You come here instead of a generic rental counter when you want the Bend, the porch, and advice that was earned in the same current you are about to step into.
