Cog Hill: Where Public Golf Still Means Championship

Southwest of the city the land rises into the Lemont hills. Limestone, ravines, and oak replace the grid. Cog Hill sits at 12294 Archer Avenue as seventy-two public holes the Jemsek family has kept open to traveling players for generations. Dubsdread—Course No. 4—is the Diamond round: Dick Wilson’s 1964 championship layout, sharpened by Rees Jones, host of the Western Open and the BMW Championship for two decades. Golf Digest still places it among America’s hundred greatest public courses. Golfweek has called it the best you can play in Illinois. From the Loop the drive is about forty minutes down I-55 and Archer, long enough to leave the river and short enough for a morning tee.

Al Jemsek and his son Joe built public golf as a serious American day rather than a municipal afterthought. Katherine Jemsek now sits as president. The idea never changed. A man who does not belong to a private club should still be able to stand on a tee that has seen the Tour. Traditional comfort here is that older bargain: dress the part, pay the fee, play the course that was built to test you.

The terrain is why Dubsdread photographs like a private estate and plays like a final. Fairways sit in corridors of mature trees. Ravines cut across the line of play. Greens are large, fast, and defended by bunkers that punish the hopeful miss. From the black tees the course stretches past seventy-five hundred yards with a slope that belongs in a championship program. Most visitors should come down a set of tees. The gold and blue still ask for a fade that holds and an approach that does not float. Wind on the higher ground is a second opponent. Course No. 2, the Ravines, is the day’s other serious eighteen if the first group wants a second loop. Nos. 1 and 3 keep a traveling foursome busy when Dubsdread is full.

Late May through June and again from Labor Day into early October are the best weeks. Spring grass has settled. Fall color sits in the oaks and the air is dry enough that the ball behaves. July and August will play; heat and humidity make the slope feel steeper and the afternoon slower. Shoulder weeks after aeration need a phone call. Winter range bays with Toptracer stay open when the fairways sleep.

The clubhouse is a historic building with a golf shop that knows the property, a restaurant and patio, Dubs Pub, and banquet rooms that have seen weddings and outings for decades. Carts carry GPS. Caddies can be arranged with notice. Collared play is the expectation. Book Dubsdread as far ahead as the shop allows—sixty days online for No. 4. Play eighteen, eat, and do not rush the nineteenth hole.

Nearby, downtown Lemont still looks like a canal town. The I&M Canal trail and the river bluffs are a short detour. Argonne’s woods sit west. Burr Ridge and Bolingbrook hotels make a stay-and-play possible if the second day is Ravines. Chicago’s southwest suburbs are not a resort strip. They are the landscape that produced this course.

The limitations are the ones a championship public course owes you. Peak green fees on Dubsdread now live in the high range for the region. Dynamic pricing means Saturday morning is not Tuesday afternoon. Pace can slow when the tee sheet is full. A private club will have tighter turf and a member’s locker. A park-district nine will be cheaper and shorter. Cog Hill will have the hole that used to be on television and a family that still owns the gate.

Cog Hill is a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination because Chicago’s great public championship course is still a course you can book. Choosing Dubsdread over a prettier municipal or a locked private club is a choice for Jemsek turf, for ravines and a slope that means something, and for the older amenity of a hard day outdoors that ends in a proper clubhouse. The comfort is traditional—a tee time, a collar, a score that had to be earned—and the benefit is driving back up Archer knowing the city still has a public round worthy of the name.
