Blue Pacific Yachting to Catalina: The Crossing

Marina del Rey is twenty-five to forty minutes from downtown, depending on the 10 and the last mile along Admiralty. Blue Pacific Yachting has worked this harbor since 1991: a fleet of sail and power boats, captains who already know the channel, crewed days that require no license and no prior seamanship. The diamond is not a loop around the breakwater. The diamond is the crossing—thirty to forty miles of Santa Monica Bay and open water to Avalon or Two Harbors, Catalina rising as the reason you left the dock.

The setting is the one Los Angeles cannot copy for any other Spotlight city. Behind you, the basin and the marina’s masts. Ahead, an island with two harbors and a ridge. Afternoon westerlies often make the passage lively and predictable. Swell is honest. A Lagoon catamaran or a well-kept monohull becomes the room: teak, canvas, a galley if the charter includes a meal, the rail as the best seat in the county. You dress for sun and spray. You let the captain work. Multi-day charters turn the island into a second night. Day trips still feel like an expedition if the wind is up.

Spring through early autumn is the season most people want: longer light, warmer decks, a harbor that is open when you arrive. Winter crossings exist for the guest who likes a quieter island and a jacket. Book early for weekends. Ask for a private chef if the day should include a table. Nearby on the mainland, Fisherman’s Village and the marina’s restaurants handle the hour before cast-off. On Catalina, Avalon’s waterfront or Two Harbors’ simpler landing is the reward.

The limits are the sea’s. Cancellations follow weather. The channel is not a lake. Guests who wanted a one-hour cocktail cruise will find other docks. Guests who wanted the professional outdoor day unique to this coast—a boat, a captain, an island—will understand why this house took the water diamond.

Blue Pacific Yachting is a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination because it turns Marina del Rey into a departure rather than a postcard. Choosing a crewed Catalina crossing instead of a rented runabout is choosing competence, a destination, and the oldest comfort the coast offers: a well-run vessel and someone on the helm who has made the passage before.
