Mountain High: Ninety Minutes to Winter

Wrightwood is eighty-five to a hundred minutes from downtown Los Angeles: the 10 or the 210 to the 15, Highway 138, then Highway 2 past a small mountain town to 24510 State Highway 2. Mountain High sits in Los Angeles County even when the mail says San Bernardino. It is the closest true ski mountain to the basin—East and West hills, a third area in the story of how three old resorts became one, lifts to about eighty-two hundred feet, night lights when the season allows. In 2017 the management team bought the property back from financial owners and kept the operation local. The mountain survived the Bridge Fire in 2024. It still opens when the snowmaking and the sky agree, often first in Southern California.

The terrain is San Gabriel winter: pine, fire-scarred ridges recovering, groomed runs that suit the guest who came from sea level this morning, parks for the rider who wants air, night skiing that turns a weekday into a full outing. It is not Tahoe vertical. It is enough mountain to spend a day and feel the altitude. Midweek is the civil time. Storm weeks are the beautiful time and the crowded time. The sports school exists for the adult who has not been on an edge in years. Summer operations give the same slopes a second calendar.

The lodge interiors are mountain-working rooms: rental counters, food service, a place to sit in wet gear. They are not a five-star alpine hotel and they do not pretend to be. Nearby Wrightwood is the small town that sells coffee and a quieter street after the lifts close. Comfort is traditional winter comfort—layers, a lesson if you need one, a mountain that is close enough to reach after breakfast.

The limits are the limits of a local hill. Parking and ticket lines swell on Saturdays. Snowpack depends on the year and the guns. Guests who wanted a destination resort with a spa between runs will keep driving. Guests who wanted Los Angeles County’s own winter day, independently held again, will be on Highway 2 before the marine layer burns off.

Mountain High is a Citywide Spotlight Outdoor Activity Diamond Destination because it is the ski outing that still belongs to this city: close, complete enough, owned by the people who run it, and high-energy in a list that otherwise favors cliffs and islands. Choosing it instead of a farther corporate mountain is choosing time, a local hill, and the simple pleasure of altitude when the basin is tired of being flat. The day ends when the lights do. The drive home is the same ninety minutes, now downhill.
