The Engine and the River
Pickwick Lake is the water Memphis has always driven toward when the week released it—Tennessee River meeting the Tenn-Tom, coves that hold the afternoon, dam light at the edge of the map. Grand Harbor sits on County Road 380 in Counce, at that junction, about two hours from the Peabody fountain. The Diamond is not a sail. It is horsepower: runabouts and pontoons kept clean, a fuel dock that uses marine-grade fuel, covered slips, a ship’s store, showers, a ramp, staff who still answer the phone as if the day depended on it. Reviews name the boats and name Candace. That is enough.
The terrain is river country. Bluffs and timber. Yellow Creek opening into broader water. Pickwick Dam a landmark. You take a motor out and the lake becomes a private road. Fish if that is the errand. Cruise toward sunset if the errand is quieter. Tube if the company is younger than the brief and you forgive them. Spring through early fall is the season; Memorial to Labor Day is the crush; April, May, September, and October are the months a professional couple will remember. Winter the marina rests. Summer weekends require a reservation the way a good restaurant does.
Inside the operation you find the comfort of a kept harbor rather than a gift-shop pier: restrooms that have been cleaned, Wi-Fi that works, trailer parking, courtesy that treats a first-time renter as a guest. Book the runabout if you wanted speed. Book the pontoon if you wanted the afternoon to sit down. Fill the cooler. Follow the staff on the rules of the water. Then let Pickwick do what Memphis cannot do from a sidewalk.
Nearby, Counce and the Landing keep kitchens and lodges. Aqua Yacht Harbor sits on the same lake if the slip is full. The drive itself is part of the day—east on 385, then 72, then 57 toward the dam—two hours in which the city thins and the river begins.
The grace is the most luxurious motor-water day in the hundred-mile brief. The graceful limitation is distance. This is not a downtown paddle. Two hours each way asks for a full day or a night. Come midweek in May or September. Choose a city nine if you only had a morning. Choose Grand Harbor if you wanted the lake to feel like an arrival.
Citywide Spotlight awards Grand Harbor the water Diamond because no closer house offers this combination of power, marina, and Pickwick light. A municipal pond will be nearer. It will not give you the river. That is the amenity of County Road 380: the engine starts, the timber opens, and the week is behind you.
