The Links at Audubon

The City Rebuilds a Course

Fifteen to twenty minutes from downtown, near the University of Memphis, Audubon used to be a municipal you played because it was there. Bill Bergin remade it. Deep bunkers now. Generous fairways that still ask a line. Greens that move. A ten-acre range that finally gives the city a place to warm a swing like an adult. Golf Digest put the rebuild on a 2025 list of best new or remodeled affordable courses. Bruno Strzalka, PGA, keeps the shop. The Little Course at Cherry Road—six short holes—sits beside the eighteen for anyone who brought a beginner or a last hour of light. Green fees stay in the municipal band. The look does not.

The terrain is East Memphis parkland: trees, a neighborhood at the edge, the feeling of a city course that has been loved enough to be rebuilt rather than abandoned. Difficulty lives in the bunkers and the greens more than in raw length. A competent player is examined without being broken. A visitor who has not played in a year can still finish with dignity. Best seasons are the same sweet months—April, May, October—plus the summer evening when the range stays open late and the heat has started to lift.

Inside, you find a golf shop, a snack bar, lessons, leagues, the practical comfort of a city facility run with a professional’s pride. Book eighteen. Pay the cart or walk. Hit a large bucket first; the new range is half the reason the Diamond landed here. Then play. Cherry Road and Park Avenue hold the ordinary East Memphis map: shopping, the university, a dinner after if the round went well.

The grace is a handsome eighteen you can reach before your coffee cools. The graceful limitation is that it remains a municipal—snack bar rather than dining room, city hours, summer traffic on the surrounding roads. Come on a weekday morning. Choose Mirimichi if you wanted sanctuary. Choose Audubon if you wanted the best rebuilt golf inside the city itself.

Citywide Spotlight awards Audubon a Golf Diamond because exceptionalism here is the rarest kind: a public course that spent real money on architecture and let a visitor keep the benefit. A casino layout will be longer. A Midtown nine will be older. This eighteen will be the one you play when the day has to stay in Memphis and still look like golf.
