Bourgeois Fishing Charters: Schoolhouse on the Bayou, Boats in the Marsh

Citywide Spotlight awards Bourgeois the water-country Diamond because it is still a family house on Bayou Barataria, and because the fishing is the kind that made Louisiana call itself a sportsman’s paradise before the phrase became a license plate. The drive from the city center is thirty to forty-five minutes south through Jean Lafitte country, past the last suburbs and into a town that still works the water. The lodge is the old Barataria Elementary School, a ten-thousand-square-foot building Theophile and Melissa Bourgeois bought in 2001 and turned into rooms, a dining galley, and a courtyard that looks at the bayou. After the later storms, their son, Captain Theophile Bourgeois IV, raised and rebuilt the place with his own hands and kept the name.

The terrain around the lodge is the estuary itself: marsh grass, open bays, cuts that hold redfish on a falling tide, trout under birds, drum and sheepshead on the structure. Bay boats run in inches of water and still take a chop when the bay stands up. Guides work conventional tackle and fly. The seaplane, when it flies, is the piece no downtown charter can copy—a short hop to barrier islands that feel like another parish. The day begins early. The boats leave the private dock. The kitchen sends you out fed and brings you home to gumbo, étouffée, grilled redfish, or whatever the house is proud of that night.

What to book is a private boat for two to four anglers and a night or two in a queen suite or the Captain’s suite if you want the full rhythm of the place. Corporate groups can take the meeting room and the larger bunking, but the Diamond is aimed at adults who came to fish and to sit afterward like guests. Fall through spring is the kindest weather. Summer fishing can be excellent at first light and punishing by noon. Winter is for the patient and the well-dressed. License and sun protection are not optional.

Inside, the lodge is a converted school that has been made comfortable without being turned into a hotel chain: high rooms, a big dining hall, a main lodge with a screen large enough for a game, a pool table, covered decks, brick courtyard, linens, and the smell of a kitchen that is actually cooking. It is not marble. It is a house that knows why you came.

Choosing Cajun Vista over a dawn meet-up at a public launch is a choice for hosting. You gain a bed near the boats, meals that belong to this parish, and a family that still answers the phone. You do not gain a French Quarter balcony. The graceful limits are distance, weather, and the fact that fish do not keep appointments. The rooms serve mixed groups; if you want only two people in the house, say so when you book. After the trip, Lafitte’s small restaurants and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve sit close enough for an afternoon that is still about this country rather than the city you left.

Bourgeois is the Fishing Diamond because the story, the water, and the table are still in one set of hands. Come for the redfish. Stay for the supper. Leave with the sense that someone was glad you made the drive.
