Story Inn

Tucked in the rolling hills and forests of Brown County—about 50 minutes south of Broad Ripple—lies Story Inn, Indiana’s oldest country inn and an entire preserved 1851 village transformed into a one-of-a-kind boutique destination. Founded as a frontier settlement, the whole town was reinvented in the 1980s by “two hippies from Bloomington” (Benjamin and Cynthia Schultz), who restored the general store, cottages, and homes into 14–15 unique overnight stays with modern comforts amid 19th-century authenticity. Today, under current stewardship (including Jacob and Kate E.), it sparkles with flower gardens, gourmet farm-to-table dining, a tavern, and trails linking to Brown County State Park and Hoosier National Forest. Visual awe peaks here: imagine strolling a ghost-haunted (affectionately, the Blue Lady) historic village with horses nearby, no TVs for true disconnection, and rooms named after original families.

Though ratings hover around 3.6–4.1, devoted fans praise the friendly staff, comfy rooms, and serene R&R—making it a cult-favorite for its unparalleled uniqueness.

Why chosen as a Citywide Spotlight Diamond Destination: Its extraordinary history and private ownership create a Diamond unlike any other—immersive, scenic, and restorative for adults seeking nature’s embrace. The Schultzes’ vision (and ongoing care) inspires with its blend of pioneer roots and modern hospitality. Benefits over alternatives? Total village privacy in breathtaking woods/hills for hiking, arts, and gourmet meals; a true unplug-and-reconnect experience with pet-friendly cottages and event spaces—offering soul-stirring beauty and history that chain stays or standard B&Bs simply cannot replicate.

Pros: Breathtaking entire-village setting and scenic nature access; historic charm with gourmet dining; friendly, accommodating service and unique lore; peaceful disconnect for couples/professionals.

Graceful Cons: Lower overall ratings reflect its rustic (not ultra-modern) vibe and distance from Broad Ripple—perfect for intentional escapes but less ideal for quick urban hops; pet-friendly policy may not suit all.
