The Peabody Memphis

The Palace That Still Turns Down the Bed

There are hotels, and then there is the building at Union and Second that taught Memphis what a hotel was for. The first Peabody opened in 1869 at Main and Monroe. The present house rose in 1925. Ducks entered the fountain in 1933 and never left the civic imagination. The Belz family kept the keys when other grande dames faded. USA Today readers have called it one of the country’s best historic hotels. You do not stay here to discover Memphis. You stay here to sleep inside the sentence the city already wrote.

The charm is ceremony that still works. Columns. Fountain. Piano after dusk. The Lobby Bar already wears a Nightcap Diamond. Feathers Spa already wears the massage Diamond. Thursday in summer the roof takes a band and the river takes the sun. Hidden from the duck-hour crowd are the quieter floors after the march, pastry from the shop downstairs, Chez Philippe when dinner should match the marble, Capriccio when steak is the point. Rooms have been rebuilt for this century: proper baths, linen that means it, the hush a palace owes a guest who has walked Beale and wants the door to close.

The interior is the South’s living room taken upstairs. You dress a little. You are received. Turndown still happens. The benefit against a boutique is scale and story. The benefit against a flag is that this flag is Memphis. Drive time from city center is none. You are standing in it.

Nearby is everything the other awards already named: Rendezvous in the alley, Main Street’s trolley, AutoZone Park, the Orpheum, Hu. a few blocks north if you want a rooftop comparison, Harbor Town ten minutes if you want the river village in the morning.

The grace is grandeur kept. The graceful limitation is the crowd grandeur attracts, the resort fee, valet, duck hours that thicken the lobby. Come midweek. Come after the march if you wanted the piano without the audience. Choose the River Inn if you wanted twenty-eight rooms and breakfast. Choose the Peabody if you wanted to wake up in the picture.

Citywide Spotlight awards The Peabody the first Rest Diamond because popularity, visual awe, and service meet here without a rival. A historic house of five suites will feel more like a secret. It will not give you this lobby. That is the amenity of 149 Union: the night ends where the city’s idea of comfort began.
