River Inn of Harbor Town

Twenty-Eight Rooms and a River

Harbor Town is Memphis trying to be a village on an island: brick square, river walk, shops, Fat Charlie’s already awarded a nightcap a few doors away. At 50 Harbor Town Square the inn keeps twenty-eight rooms as if Europe had borrowed the Mississippi for a weekend. Poster beds. Walnut. Fine linen. Window dressing that takes the water seriously. Breakfast is part of the stay. Port and chocolate arrive at turndown. Parking does not become an argument. From downtown the drive is eight to twelve minutes across the Wolf River and onto the island. From the airport, about twenty.

The charm is residential scale. You are not processed through a ballroom corridor. You are shown a room that was decorated as a room. A New Orleans mantel holds a fire downstairs. Hardwood from an old Virginia mill underfoot. Paulette’s and the Terrace sit in the same house if dinner should not require a car. The rooftop watches the river take the light—the hidden hour guests remember after they have forgotten the thread count. Walk the loop. Sit the square. Sleep with the water in the glass.

José and Jennifer did not build this inn; Harbor Town and the inn’s keepers built a habit of welcome that reviews keep calling wonderful. Packages appear for picnics and anniversaries. Event space exists if a small wedding found the island first. The fitness room is for guests, not for spectacle.

Nearby: Tug’s, Cocozza, the marina, the Pyramid a short hop, downtown ten minutes when Beale calls, the pinch of North Main if you want murals with breakfast.

The grace is intimacy and river light. The graceful limitation is distance from Beale on foot and a room count that books up when the city is busy. You will want a car or a short ride for the big downtown night. Come for the island. Choose the Peabody if you wanted marble and ducks. Choose the River Inn if you wanted to be put to bed as if the house knew your name.

Citywide Spotlight awards River Inn the boutique Rest Diamond because twenty-eight finished rooms on the Mississippi are rarer than another rooftop downtown. Hu. will put the city under your window. This inn will put the river there, and breakfast too. That is the amenity of Harbor Town Square: the village holds until morning.
